She’s “Sweet and Funky,” she’s “Cute and Bad”. A Composer. A Performer extraordinaire. The legendary Dr. Lonnie Smith describes her this way: “Akiko's playing is like watching a flower blooming, a bird spreading her wings in the music world. Akiko is here to stay. ” Raised in Osaka, Japan, this talented musician began studying the organ at the age of three, at the famed Yamaha Music School. After discovering her passion for jazz very early on in her musical journey, Akiko launched her career immediately after graduating from the Osaka College of Music. While living and playing in Osaka, she had many opportunities to perform with world-renowned jazz musicians from the United States. Meeting Grady Tate, in particular, was a life-changing event for Akiko. ‘

After landing in the mecca for jazz, New York City, it didn’t take long for Akiko to make her mark - It was during these early years that she had the great pleasure of sitting in, playing gigs, and eventually recording with jazz greats such as Frank Wess, Jimmy Cobb, Grady Tate and other top NY musicians. Her reputation ultimately drew attention of Lou Donaldson as he chose her in 2006 as his quartet’s organist.

But it was the meeting of organ legend Dr. Lonnie Smith that proved to have the greatest impact on Akiko’s musical development and career. He became an important mentor to Akiko, and she considers him her greatest influence. She flourished and continued to be a constant draw on the NY jazz scene.

Akiko has ten albums as a leader to her credit. Her debut album in the U.S., “Sweet and Funky” ,was selected as a “Best album of 2007” in DOWNBEAT Magazine. Hot House Magazine has just named her 'Best Organ" in the 2017 Readers Poll. Her albums have constantly placed in the top ten on the National Radio Jazz Chart.

Akiko’s newest excitement is a trio project features a jazz celebrity drummer, Jeff Hamilton and a superb rising guitarist, Graham Dechter, and their first recording, “Equal Time” will be released in June 2019. This thrilling trio will be performing 2 nights at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in May 2019.

Just take a listen to this dynamic performer, and I’m sure you will agree with the legendary Dr.

Jerry Weldon • On the Move!

Tenor saxophonists Jerry Weldon and Michael Karn share many of the same influences including Dexter Gordon, Sonny Stitt, Sonny Rollins, Hank Mobley and Joe Henderson. Karn has a slightly harder tone but the two tenors are quite complementary and of equal talent. For this hard bop outing from Criss Cross, Weldon and Karn are joined by pianist Bruce Barth, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Billy Drummond. Although the co-leaders contribute two originals apiece, the newer pieces are in the same basic chordal-oriented style as the six vintage tunes (which include a long and blazing tenor tradeoff on "Ko-Ko," "Ow," the Sonny Rollins-associated "If Ever I Would Leave You" and ballad features for Karn ("Who Can I Turn To") and Weldon ("All the Way"). Fun music easily recommended to straight-ahead jazz collectors. ~ Scott Yanow

Brother Jack McDuff • That's The Way I Feel About It

Review by Richard S. Ginell
At times, McDuff demonstrates how soul-jazz organ stars used to make albums back in their '60s heyday, playing then-current pop hits like "The Age of Aquarius" and the theme from Mission: Impossible (which, thanks to cinema, was a hit all over again in 1996 when this CD was made). We also hear McDuff trying out his vocal cords for the first time on Louis Jordan's "Saturday Night Fish Fry"; actually, he merely talks the lyrics over the rhythm section -- and at 70, he's entitled to this charming lark. Otherwise, this is another fine, home-cookin' soul-jazz session, with McDuff's Hammond B-3 burning at its usual low-intensity, high-blues-content level. Chris Potter dances around the organ on flutes, Andrew Beals and Jerry Weldon offer solid solos on alto and tenor respectively, and the rest of the Heatin' System runs the gamut from Latin to soul-deep grooves. Fans of the genre can buy with peace of mind.

Jerry Weldon • The Summit

Jerry Weldon brings his bold and bright tenor to the fore with a post bopping team of Alonzo Demetrius/tp, Peter Lin/tb, Mike Bond/p, Jason Clotter/b and Carmen Intorre Jr/dr for a snazzy gig back in 2024 in swinging New Brunswick. The leader is strong and confident as he flexes his muscles on his own ‘Sunny V”, while Demetrius taps into his inner Lee Morgan over Intorre’s exuberatnt drums on “Calling Miss Khadija”. Bond shines with Weddon on a wonderfully laconic “ You Go To My Head” while the horn men show their testosterone on the macho read of Wayne Shorter’s “The Summit” . And oh, yes, they can swing, with Clotter digging into a bopping line for “Minority” and the horns sweet and hot for “On The Sunny Side Of The Street”. Blue plate blue notes.

On The Sunny Side Of The Street”. Notas azules del plato azul.

Brother Jack McDuff • The Best of the Concord Years

Review by Steve Leggett
Hammond B-3 organist Jack McDuff spent his last decade recording for the Concord Jazz label, and for the most part his albums during this time period lacked the verve and fire of his earlier work, and he seemed, at times, to be going through the motions. The two-disc Best of the Concord Years anthology changes that perception a bit, since by picking some of the best tracks from the individual albums, the end result is a collection that is both more varied and energetic than its original sources, and McDuff emerges as a vital performer to the end. Among the highlights are the slow-building "Killer Joe," a moving take on Hoagy Carmichael's "Georgia," the classic soul jazz vamp of "Pettin' the Cat," and a pair of weary, emotionally fulfilling blues duets with pianist Gene Harris, "J and G Blues" and "Down Home Blues." Grady Tate, George Benson, Joey DeFrancesco, Red Holloway, and Pat Martino also take guest turns on selections here. The Best of the Concord Years ends up being just that, the best way to sample McDuff's final years, and culled this way, it is work that stands up admirably to his impressive earlier material.

, "J y G Blues" y "Down Home Blues".

Jerry Weldon • Well-Done!

The high-water mark of Well-Done! is Jerry Weldon's rousing, up-tempo cover of "Filthy McNasty." Barking out four bars of Horace Silver's angular, no-nonsense line, Weldon sounds as if he can bulldoze anything that gets in his way. The tenor saxophonist's single-mindedness is exhilarating. Subsequent to the entrance of Hammond B-3 organist Kyle Koehler's pumping bass line and drummer Jason Brown's sturdy beat, he takes fifteen smart, frenetic choruses, pushing and pulling phrases into shape so as to make each chorus stand on it own.

The rest of the disc shines in a somewhat less ecstatic fashion. Weldon takes his time enunciating most of Tadd Dameron's "On A Misty Night," before executing exuberant bop runs on the bridge. Staying connected to Koehler and Brown rather than simply plowing over them, his solo contains long sweeping lines, blues declarations and a number of economical, down-to-earth passages. An improvisation during his low-key original, "To Marie," is nicely paced, lyrical and expansive. Early on he pauses, lets a few beats go by and then finishes a thought. Weldon eases into the melody of the seldom played "Mona Lisa," waxing wistful for a time, gradually becoming more animated, yet never completely abandoning the ballad feel.

Koehler, the composer of two of the disc's eight tracks, stimulates Weldon with a variety of comping maneuvers and is a versatile, spirited improviser. Building to a few brief climaxes over several choruses, his "State of the Union" solo is remarkably free of clutter and cliche. Koehler doesn't dwell on one thought for too long, and makes a somewhat conventional vocabulary sound fresh and engaging. A strong sense of the music's basic pulse informs everything he plays throughout "The Easy Out," a funky, Latin-tinged tune. Combining intelligent design and intense rhythmic thrust, even during the densest of passages he purposely moves forward without becoming obtuse or too forceful.

///////

Joey DeFrancesco • Joey D!

Joey DeFrancesco, who has graduated from heir-apparent to undisputed king among contemporary jazz organists, is in his element here, presiding over a trio comprised of himself, undervalued tenor saxophonist Jerry Weldon and reliable drummer Byron Landham. Rest assured DeFrancesco's nimble fingers are as virtuosic as ever, and there's no need to fret about the slender rhythm section, as DeFrancesco happily provides his own.

DeFrancesco is perfectly at ease and in control even though recording for the first time on a new Diversi DV-Duo Plus drawbar organ with "modified sound engine and modeling technology." It comes alive, as one would expect, in DeFrancesco's proficient hands, and he is squarely on his game regardless of mood or tempo. The same can be said of Weldon, an unapologetic bopper whose hard-edged tenor complements superbly the leader's more even-tempered moments. Landham, DeFrancesco's longtime companion and helpmate, is ideally cast in the role of rhythmic navigator.

DeFrancesco's choice of music is exemplary, from Miles Davis' meteoric curtain-raiser, "Dig," to the heated finale, Gene Ammons' impulsive "Blues Up and Down" (which underlines the Dexter Gordon ascendancy in Weldon's arsenal). The trio even manages to make "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" seem fresh and engaging. Completing the prismatic program are J.J. Johnson's plaintive "Lament" and the tasteful standards "If Ever I Should Lose You," "Besame Mucho," "Come Dance with Me" and "Nancy (with the Laughing Face)," the last two associated with Frank Sinatra.

This is high-quality straight-ahead contemporary jazz, a worthy successor to splendid organ trios led in years past by such giants as Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Jack McDuff, Don Patterson and others. DeFrancesco is the monarch now, and if Joey D! is any signpost, he harbors no desire to abdicate.

El trío incluso consigue que "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" parezca fresco y atractivo.

Jerry Weldon • Don't Look Back

Internationally renowned veteran sax man Jerry Weldon, has been a player on the jazz scene for more than 35 years. With eight CD’s as a leader and more sideman sides than even he can count…or remember, this native New Yorker’s performance/recording résumé reflects his venerable tenor tenure and reads like a virtual “Who's Who of Jazz.”

After graduating from Rutgers University Jazz Studies Program in 1981, Jerry joined the legendary Lionel Hampton Orchestra and continued his association with Hamp into the new millennium. Next came a long, rewarding stint with master organist Jack McDuff & his “Heatin' System.” Additionally Jerry has worked with organists Jimmy McGriff, Joey DeFrancesco, Bobby Forrester, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Mel Rhyne, trombone great Al Grey, piano giants George Cables and Cedar Walton, drum legends Roy Haynes and Jimmy Cobb as well as guitarist/singer George Benson, guitarist Earl Klugh, bassist Keter Betts, singer Mel Tormé and a host of other legendary musicians.

In 1990, Jerry became a charter member and featured soloist with Harry Connick Jr.'s newly formed big band. Since then Jerry has toured the U.S., Europe, Asia and Australia with Harry and was also part of Connick's Broadway musical production, “Thou Shalt Not” and appeared on stage as well as in the orchestra. Now, thanks to his talent, and long association with Connick, Jerry can be seen daily as part of the “house band” on HARRY, Connick’s new daytime television variety show. HARRY is produced and distributed by NBC Universal and has been sold to 99% of the U.S., including Fox, Sinclair, Hearst, NBC Owned Stations, CBS, Scripps, Tribune and other station groups. The program airs in the coveted 4PM time slot in most markets.

Jerry, a “musician’s musician,” who is also a first class showman in the truest sense of the word, blows his horn with his entire body and delights audiences with his all-in, soulful playing. Depending on the tune, Weldon’s warm fat tenor sound can roll and roar like a thunderstorm or gentle you like a warm summer breeze…and it always, always resonates far beyond the listener’s ear, Whether he’s walkin’ the crowded bar at Showmans in Harlem or wending his way through packed candlelit tables at Birdland in Midtown, Jerry Weldon is a tenor force that cannot be contained. He becomes the music and brings the audience with him on a communal tuneful journey. This mastery of the message, and the medium, has kept Weldon working steady for nearly four decades. Jerry’s latest recording, “On the Move,” spent two months on the Jazz Week charts and he at work on a new CD

Jerry Weldon • Those Were The Days

Jerry Weldon: Those Were the Days
It's no longer certain what music cold be classified as "mainstream" jazz. One can argue that the genre (and all others, for that matter) have atomized to the point of each performance being considered a genre in itself (a desirable outcome to the music anarchists among us). That said, some type of classification remains useful in describing music, if for no other reason than to let a listener know that "this sounds a great deal like that." Which brings us to tenor saxophonist Jerry Weldon. Weldon presently serves featured soloist in Harry Connick, Jr.'s long serving big band, who presently provide tafelmusik for Connick's Harry weekday talk show on ABC. The present Those Were the Days is Weldon's debut on Cory Weeds' Cellar Live label. The saxophonist has released seven previous recordings.

The touchstone of Those Were the Days is economy. Everything about this recording smacks of a scrupulous efficiency borne of an extended tenure in a big band like Connick's. This begins with his judicious use of an organ trio format augmented with a percussionist not unlike that employed in the 1950s and '60s Blue Note organ blowing dates. Organist Kyle Koehler is a conservative sort, favoring understated organ stop positions and thoughtful solo excursions. His tone reveals the best of a sepia-tinged style that could have been heard introducing The Edge of Night. Koehler's contribution to this date cannot be understated and is splendidly emotive and orchestral. He is most present introducing the title cut, which closes the recording, framing Weldon's muscular and exacting tenor tone with a soft glow, propelled by the gentle loping rhythm of drummer Colby Inzer.

Weldon favors modern ballads like the full-throated "Strangers in the Night" and the Bacharach/David "Walk on By" played samba style in a breezy and laconic mode. Weldon's own "Sunny V," retaining a bit of samba itself, is bright and inventive. The saxophonist and organist reach a precise critical mass playing Jimmy Smith's "The Sermon," the only blowing blues on the set. Everything comes into relief focus on this tune with all instruments well synced and calibrated. This is an excellent penultimate piece to introduce the closing "Those Were the Days." This could definitely be called "mainstream" jazz, that brand of jazz immediately recognizable, durable and expressive, a joy to behold and listen to.

Akiko Tsuruga • Oriental Express

Review by Ken Dryden
With her third release as a leader, Japanese-born jazz organist Akiko Tsuruga demonstrates her growth as a player, having distilled the essence of many of the giants of the instrument, including Jimmy Smith, Charles Earland, Mel Rhyne, Brother Jack McDuff, and others. One of relatively few women who has gained exposure playing jazz organ, Tsuruga shows a surprising maturity at the instrument, using a wide variety of dynamics, while her adventurous spirit shows in her improvising and choice of rhythms. Two of her sidemen on these sessions, tenor saxophonist Jerry Weldon and drummer Rudy Perschauer, were members of McDuff's final band and their presence no doubt stimulated the young organist. Also making important contributions are guitarist Eric Johnson and percussionist Wilson Chembo Corniel, both of whom appeared on her previous 18th & Vine CD Sweet and Funky. Her breezy setting of "The Frim Fram Sauce" (a hit for pianist Nat King Cole during the '40s) and funky Latin setting of Lee Morgan's "Sidewinder" are obvious highlights. She's equally adept handling standards like "Teach Me Tonight" and Henry Mancini' lush ballad "Dreamsville," both of which prominently feature Johnson. With this outstanding effort, Akiko Tsuruga is easily one of the fast rising stars on jazz organ.

Jack McDuff • Write On, Capt'n

Review by Ron Wynn
This date doesn't pack the same punch as McDuff's 1960s classics, but is mostly enjoyable despite some annoying trumpet from Joey DeFrancesco (a fine organist and McDuff fan) and McDuff's own arrangements for the large band backing him. Sometimes the two-trumpet/two-sax/trombone frontline seems more of a burden than a help. They are good players, but they aren't given enough to do to be exciting and sometimes just seem in the way. While it's great to hear McDuff back on the Hammond B-3, this will not make anyone forget his Prestige dates with George Benson.
